BIS(CRS)Registration is mandatory for electronic and IT products to be sold in India. We handle the complete registration process from documentation to approval.
BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a conformity assessment scheme administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for products covered under the applicable CRS notifications/orders issued by the Government of India.
Under CRS, manufacturers are required to demonstrate conformity of their products with the applicable Indian Standard (IS) before placing covered products on the Indian market.
The scheme is operated under Scheme II of Schedule II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, framed under the BIS Act, 2016.
The objective of CRS is to ensure that covered electronic and IT products meet the applicable Indian safety and quality requirements and to protect consumers from non-conforming and substandard products.
BIS grants registration to eligible manufacturers based on conformity assessment requirements and permits the registered manufacturer to use the applicable Standard Mark with a unique R-number, subject to the terms and conditions of the registration.

Under CRS, the manufacturer is the applicant for registration. The BIS registration is associated with the relevant:
Therefore, BIS CRS registration requirements need to be assessed separately for each manufacturer, manufacturing location, product category, applicable standard and brand.
BIS CRS registration is required for products that are specifically covered under the applicable CRS notifications/orders before they are manufactured, imported, sold or distributed in India, as applicable.
Indian manufacturers producing products covered under CRS are required to obtain BIS registration before placing such products on the Indian market.
Foreign manufacturers supplying CRS-covered products to India are also required to comply with the applicable BIS CRS requirements.
A foreign manufacturer generally needs to appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) where required under the applicable BIS requirements. The AIR acts as the Indian representative for communication and coordination with BIS.
MCS Technology can assist overseas manufacturers with the BIS CRS registration process, AIR coordination, documentation, product testing and BIS portal submission.
The BIS CRS registration process can broadly be completed in the following three stages:
The manufacturer is registered on the BIS portal and the required manufacturer and product information is prepared for the application.
Representative product samples are tested at a BIS-recognized laboratory against the applicable Indian Standard.
The required sample quantity depends on the applicable product standard and testing requirements.
After completion of testing, the applicable test report and supporting technical/statutory documents are submitted through the BIS portal.
BIS reviews the application and supporting documents. Upon successful completion of the applicable requirements, BIS grants the registration with the applicable R-number.
The following documents are generally required, subject to the applicable product and BIS requirements:
Foreign manufacturers generally need to provide:
Where an AIR is required, the following information/documents may be required:
The overall timeline depends on the product category, applicable Indian Standard, laboratory testing schedule, documentation, BIS scrutiny and any queries raised during processing.
Typically, the process may take approximately 15–35 working days after receipt of complete documentation and samples, subject to laboratory and BIS processing timelines.
For overseas manufacturers, the process may require approximately 35–40 working days or more, depending on:
Actual timelines may vary depending on the product and current BIS/laboratory processing conditions.
The required sample quantity depends on the applicable Indian Standard, product category, model grouping and laboratory testing requirements.
MCS Technology can review the product details and applicable standard to determine the required sample quantity before testing.
BIS CRS registration is generally granted for a period of up to five years, subject to compliance with applicable BIS requirements and payment of the prescribed renewal / annual fees, as applicable.
The registration remains subject to the conditions specified by BIS and the applicable regulations/orders.
MCS Technology provides end-to-end support for BIS CRS registration for Indian and overseas manufacturers.
